Coloured Chickens

Well, I've finally succumbed. I am writing my first blog post! And all because of chickens! For those of you who know me, you'll know that I love chickens- the way they gather up their skirts and ruffle their fluffy bottoms racing across the grass; and witnessing the laying of an egg has also reduced me to a being rather moist round the edges!
Well, before I start and in defense of this post, I have to say I am very much into organic philosophy. Also, I'm not into genetically modifying our food and support heirloom seeds wherever possible. But! I have a problem- a rather perennial problem. The problem is: how do I tell which chickens are laying the eggs and which are just hitching a ride on the feed train?!
We have one chicken (a black one) that lays green eggs- really quite startling green eggs. This means somewhere in her heritage there must be Araucana chickens. Anyway, the point is I know when she's laying and when she's not. Wouldn't it be great if we could raise chickens that each laid a different colour so that we' know instantly who to keep and who to consign to the great soup-pot in the sky?
This would probably involve a modification of some sort- from dyes in the food to surgically implanted markers (I think I have way too much time on my hands!). But wouldn't it be cool?!!
